An old authentic Portuguese village, Barão de São João is made up of small houses, a couple of local grocery shops, (eco-products are available), friendly cafes and small restaurants.
There is a daily bus route from Barão de São João to Lagos, passing Bensafrim (9km). Lagos is an old city with beautiful beaches, pleasant markets and plenty of historical places of interest, the old slave market for instance.
The ancient walls of Lagos were built in the 16th century.
Lagos has many shops and lots of typical Portuguese restaurants to choose from, where you can eat fresh fish dishes or "frango piri-piri" (spicy grilled chicken). For those who enjoy the nightlife there are plenty of cafes, bars and a couple of clubs.

Along the south coast you will find beautiful fishing villages, like Burgau and Salema. Many people like to visit Sagres (30km.), as it is the most southwesterly point of Europe with its impressive rock formations.

It is only a half hour drive to the west coast with its unspoilt beaches and beautiful views. This is a splendid area for hiking.

It is possible to take a train from Lagos all along the south coast to the Spanish border. Lagos also has a central bus station.

The old town of Silves with its Moorish architecture is a worthwhile visit as is the village of Monchique situated in the beautiful mountains where life is still uncomplicated.
